hi everyone i wonder if anyone can help me. I have a 2 year old malinois which has just been diagnosed with hip displysia i am waiting for her hip score to come back but have been told by the vet that she has got very bad hips and will be on medication for the rest of her life. Prior to this she was a very energetic dog that loved being out with me all the time i have been told her exercise has to be cut right down due to causing more strain on her hips i was wondering what will be the best exercise for her. surgery is not an option as i have been told by the vet that it will cost £7000 per hip replacement. She still is full of energy and has so much love to give us that i want to do the same for her and give her the best quality of life that i can.I got her from a pet shop where she was tied up at the back on a little chain with no fur on her neck and knew straight away i wasnt leaving there till i got her and i think she felt the same for me.I didnt know much about the belgian shepherd malinois but being a dog groomer had come across the groenedael. She was 18 weeks old when i got her and did have some bad habits but with perserverance and loads of love and of course training i couldnt wish for a better dog, like my daughter says she is the glue in our family (she keeps us all together). If anyone give me any information on hd or if they have had a dog that has gone through it or going through it will be much appriciated thankyou

Hi and welcome...
As I said in my email, I don't know a lot about HD, but I would be tempted to switch to a specialist dog-food, such as Hills J/D. We have a dog that suffered from arthritis and we were able to take her off of Metacam within weeks of switching to J/D. It has something in it that helps with joint development (hence the name J/D) and may at least delay the deterioration of the hips, if not actually cure it. I'm trying not to be cynical here, but is it really that bad? Or could it be that the vet is looking forward to lifelong sales of drugs and/or the revenue from the Operation? Might be worth getting a second opinion? Big thumbs up for rescuing the poor mite
I hope you reported the pet shop to the RSPCA or something? Sounds like a cruelty case to me? ![]() |

hi thankyou for replying i will definitely ask the vet about hills jd when she goes tomorrow and hopefully find out her hip score to see how bad it is thankyou again .the owner of the shop said he was going to keep her thats why she was out the back but obviously was there a long time on the chain as her fur was all gone from her neck and she was the last one to go out the litter coz her tail was an inch short where her mum had chewed it off. im just so glad i went in there when i did and see her coz she is just one in a million.
